The Tehlin (PR: /ˈteɪlɪn/)[1] religion is centred around the belief that Tehlu is creator and god.

Description[]

Tehlinism is the most dominant religion in The Four Corners of Civilization, and is strongest in The Aturan Empire, Vintas and Commonwealth. It is known for being strict, with an emphasis on repentance.

Beliefs[]

Beliefs include:

  • Tehlu took human form as Menda and destroyed all the demons in the world. He bound Encanis to an iron wheel and burnt him to death.[2]
  • Tehlu judges all thoughts and actions and frowns on taking his name in vain.[3]
  • The Outer Dark is the home of demons, which exist.[4][5]

Practices[]

Practices include:

  • Priests wear pale grey robes, which are meant as a reminder of Tehlu's sacrifice of allowing himself to be immolated in order to hold the demon Encanis on the iron wheel in the fire and destroy him.[6]
  • Some rituals involve chanting and ringing bells.[7]
  • The official language of the church is Tema.[8]
  • The Tehlin church employs mercenary soldiers, commanded by Justices, who wear a set of silver scales around their necks as a mark of rank.[9] Justices are a form of church enforcement allowed to mete out the its authority in places where it holds sway.
  • Penitent priests wear heavy iron chains and little else is known about them.[7]
  • They practice charity.[10][11][12]
  • They frown on gambling.[13]
  • They keep detailed records on trials and marriages (and presumably births and deaths).[14][15][16]
  • They conduct funerals (and presumably mariages).[17]

In The Chronicle[]

A Justice named Erlus had Skarpi arrested for heresy after he told one of his stories at the Half-Mast in Tarbean, prompting Kvothe's flight from that city towards the University.[18]
