Ademic is the language spoken in Ademre. It is a form of communication used alongside the Adem sign language. Ademic is notably different from Aturan in that it has comparatively few words, but the cultural emphasis on implication, suggestion, and reflection gives any speech many fine shades of meaning.[1]
The Ademic written language is only used by high-status individuals, if it even exists. The stores in Ademre use pictures rather than words to show what they sell[2] and Magwyn is the only person Kvothe sees using written language in Haert[3], though Shehyn also understands it[4]. In the story Shehyn tells, Rethe wrote a quatrain[5] and Aethe transcribed the nine-and-ninety stories[6], suggesting that the written language is very old.
Kvothe describes the language as contrasting the ‘cadence’ of its words. This likely describes lexical tone, or even a form of pitch accent.
